Potassium iodide is a salt of stable iodine, and although it contains potassium, it differs substantially from supplements designed to prevent potassium deficiencies.
All our body cells need iodine but the body cannot produce it, therefore, all our iodine comes from our diet or supplementation.
It has been found that iodine is protective against toxicity from bromine, fluoride and chlorine.
Potassium iodide is used to treat certain chronic lung problems. For asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema sufferers, potassium iodide helps loosen and break up mucus in the airways.
Potassium iodide is used along with other medications, to treat overactive thyroid conditions. It is also needed for normal hormone production by the thyroid gland and for the proper functioning of the entire endocrine system.
Studies have clearly shown that an iodine deficiency and resultant low levels of thyroid hormone, can cause infertility in woman, thyroid autoimmune disease and even cancer of the thyroid. It is also thought that low iodine levels may contribute towards other types of cancer.
It has also been found that an iodine deficiency during pregnancy, can lead to elevated blood pressure in the mother, and mental and physical retardation of the baby.
How it works:
Potassium iodide protects the thyroid gland, by blocking radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid.
It works as an expectorant by stimulating mucus secretion by the lungs in acute and chronic pulmonary diseases.
