INFORMATION ON SODIUM BICARBONATE

Sodium bicarbonate, is a chemical compound, and as a supplement, it introduces bicarbonate, which can increase the body’s natural serum bicarbonate and help buffer acid production in the body.

It acts as an alkalizing agent and is mainly used to relieve heartburn and acid indigestion.

Sodium bicarbonate can be used to treat both chronic age related metabolic acidosis as well as exercise induced acidosis.

It has been observed in athletes, that sodium bicarbonate supplementation reliably improves power output and anaerobic running performance, where metabolic acidosis or “the burn” is involved.

Because of its ability to pH-buffer in the body, Sodium bicarbonate may reduce the rate of bone loss in susceptible adults, help prevent renal stones and protect tissues of the central nervous system where drastic pH change could cause damage.

It can also be used in the treatment of hypokalemia, as it pushes potassium back into cells during hypocholermic metabolic alkalosis (low chlorine levels in the blood coincidental with a rise in pH).

How it works:

Sodium bicarbonate, as a supplement, introduces bicarbonate which can increase the body’s natural serum bicarbonate and help buffer acid production in the body.

It neutralizes hydrochloric acid in the stomach and raises blood and urinary pH.
